I don't want to say that Shadow of Mordor is bad or should not exist. They are not strictly speaking canon but most of them match up to the books pretty well, and the sub can answer any questions you have about the movies. The less preferable option (but still good) for those who do not like to read, is to watch the (LOTR) movies (don't watch the hobbit movies for Tolkien stuff, it's almost as bad as SoM). There is a great guide in the sidebar for reading, so I don't need to go into any more depth. Your best bet for learning more about the Tolkien universe, is, of course, to read the books. The Tolkien universe is an amazing place to learn about, which I presume is what you came here for, to learn more about it.

I don't intend to bash the game, I just want to let it be known that nothing in the game can be taken as fact in the Tolkien universe. If you are coming to ask if some part of Shadow of Mordor matches the books/is canon/makes sense, etc., the answer will almost certainly be no. Growth in the community is good, just some of the newcomers need their questions about SoM answered here :). I'd just like to say a few words for those who are arriving because of Shadow of Mordor, specifically people whose only experience with Middle-Earth is the game. I've been seeing a lot of posts related to Shadow of Mordor in the sub recently, which isn't a bad thing! It's great to see people coming to learn more about the Tolkien universe.
